Next to the eyes, our faces’ most prominent feature is the nose. When there is no harmony between the nose and the rest of the face, it can be quite distressing. For this reason, reshaping the nose using a surgery called Rhinoplasty is very commonplace. As a procedure, Rhinoplasty can change the shape of the bridge or the tip of the nose, change the angle between the upper lip and the nose, increase or reduce the size of the nose, and even adjust the width of the nostrils. Although most people undergo Rhinoplasty for aesthetic and cosmetic reasons, others choose the procedure to relieve breathing problems, or because they suffered facial injury. If the surgery is undergone for such functional reasons, a fraction of the surgical costs may be covered by medical insurance.
Here at Cosmetic Skin and Surgery Center, our resident plastic surgeon, Dr. William Boss will be able to advise you on how Rhinoplasty could enhance your appearance. Dr. Boss will be able to recommend the best surgery for you, based on your medical history and expectations.
ARE YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE?
It is important to know that Rhinoplasty won’t match your ideal by drastically changing your looks, but it will increase your self-confidence and enhance your appearance. The goal is improvement, not perfection. If you are healthy and your expectations are realistic enough, you are a very good candidate. For this nose reshaping procedure, there is really no set upper age limit. However, most surgeons prefer not to operate until the age of sixteen for females and a bit later for males when they have at least finished growing. Of course, surgeons take into consideration the patient’s emotional and social adjustment.
ABOUT THE CONSULTATION
When performed by a plastic surgeon with the right qualifications, Rhinoplasty can indeed help you achieve the profile you desire safely with hardly any complications. However, Dr. Boss will still discuss all possible side effects with you, even if their occurrence is unusual. He will show you before and after photos of patients who have noses similar to yours, as well as review the special technique he will be using on you at length. Furthermore, if there are other facial procedures that could complement your nose surgery, he will discuss those with you, as well. Cheek or chin procedure are often chosen by some patients as they can be performed simultaneously. A second procedure may be required in 1 out of 10 cases. These are unpredictable cases and are usually minor. Other factors that Dr. Boss will discuss with you are the type of anesthesia that will be used, the timing, and the expected outcome. Dr. Boss has been known to make patients feel comfortable with his empathy and communication skills.
Depending on how much correction needs to be done, the Rhinoplasty procedure normally takes just an hour and half, approximately. This is an outpatient procedure performed under general or local anesthesia. In order to achieve the desired shape during the surgery, the nose’s skin is separated from the bone and cartilage that serve as its supporting framework before it is sculpted. The way this is done depends on your anatomy. Finally, with a new, re-sculpted framework, the skin is put back. Dr. Boss will either use a closed or open technique, depending on your specific needs. The incisions are made closer to the nostrils’ base in the open technique, while in the closed type, they are made inside the nostrils’ rim. Either way, the nose’s soft tissue will need to be separated from the bone and cartilage lying underneath and these are then sculpted as needed to achieve the desired shape. Moreover, by simply changing the shape or removing the obstructing matter in its entirety, breathing obstructions and other such internal problems can be corrected at the same time. To ensure that the new shape of your nose is maintained, a splint will be installed at the end of the surgery. To stabilize the wall that divides the air passages known as the septum, soft plastic splints or nasal packs may also be applied.
AFTER THE NOSE SURGERY
The day after the Rhinoplasty procedure, patients are advised to stay in bed with their head elevated. They are already up and about by the second day. On day 3, there will be a decrease in the swelling and bruising around the eyes. The patient will be able to go back to work or school when the splint is removed in about a week. Head elevation and ice compresses will help with the bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose. If the septum was involved in the surgery, nasal stuffiness may occur and this is normal. However, Dr. Boss recommends waiting for about 2 weeks before you can blow your nose gently. For 8 weeks, sun exposure and further injury to the area will need to be avoided, so you have to be extra careful. As to when strenuous activity like exercise can be resumed, Dr. Boss will provide you with specific instructions.
